An Appeal to Fans of the Bay Area Storytelling Festival

Are you looking forward to the next Bay Area Storytelling Festival? Well, we have good news and bad news.

The bad news: The Bay Area Storytelling Festival lost money in 2010, nearly $10,000. Why? Our costs increased in almost all areas, and the weekend was so cold it affected attendance. The most significant factor, however, is that the East Bay Regional Park District, our long time co-sponsor, withdrew their sponsorship, decreased assistance, and increased the Festival's financial contribution.

The bad, bad news: There will not be a Festival in 2011.

The good news? We believe we can continue this magnificent tradition, but we must have your help to do so. During these very difficult economic times, a number of storytelling festivals have closed their doors. We're determined not to let that happen here in the Bay Area. We believe, with you help, we can produce another marvelous festival in 2012.

What do we need from you? A financial contribution. Your tax-deductible donation in any amount, would be of the greatest help. We have never asked for this sort of help before. Not once in twenty-five years. But the Festival needs it now. We cannot do it without you.

Is the Festival worth your support?
  • The Bay Area Storytelling Festival is the oldest in California. We remain an exemplar in Festival diversity, after pioneering culturally varied programming twenty-fiveyears ago.
  • The Festival knits the Bay Area community of storytellers and story lovers together, and provides an unrivaled experience for those new to the art form.
  • Community outreach has always been part of our mission. Though most of our audience knows about our weekend performances, the Festival actually begins on Friday morning with performances that captivate 750 nearby elementary school children, many from economically disadvantaged areas.

These are the most obvious benefits, but there are others that are less visible: the simple act of listening to tales of wisdom and beauty, the chance to laugh deep and long, the enrichment of stories from other places, other times, and the stories of your own that reappear for you to tell.

So it is true, there will be no Festival in 2011, but with your help there will be one in 2012, the first of the next twenty-five. We think that goal is worth fighting for. After all, stories are the best company during hard times, both windows and mirrors of all we treasure.

The Board of Directors of the Storytelling Association of California and members of the Bay Area Storytelling Festival Committee have already pledged $1,775 toward the continuation of the Festival. Please join us by sending a donation of any amount to SAC.
